Østerlandsk Kafferisteri Company Information

General information

ENGLISH VERSION:

Østerlandsk Thehus was founded in 1889 by a Danish marine soldier who with the Valkyrie frigate had participated in the English Queen Victoria's 50 year anniversary in 1887. The British Admiralty had offered a tea which made such a big impression on Seaman William Søren Jacobsen that he took the recipe for the blend back to Copenhagen. In Copenhagen he founded Østerlandsk Thehus where the special "Admiralitetsthe" is still one of the house blends. This tea has for years been appreciated not only by the citizens of Copenhagen but also by customers from all over the country.

Third generation of the Jacobsen family has owned and managed Østerlandsk Thehus until 1981 where the current owner Evy Svendsen took over the company. The reputation as a leading business for tea and coffee are maintained and new areas of retail and wholesale services have appeared. With grandparents who emigrated from Italy to Denmark around 1900, it was quite natural for Mrs. Svendsen to add Italian style to the tea house. Gradually more and more Italian products became a part of the house range. For example the espresso machine for domestic use was actually introduced by Østerlandsk Thehus, which today is probably the company in Northern Europe with the largest selection of espresso machines.

There is a great expertise behind the house's large selection of exclusive coffees in the sense that it was Torben Svendsen who was the first in Denmark to introduce the concept of "Specialty Coffee." His acquaintance and cooperation with the world's leading coffee specialists in the Specialty Coffee has led to Østerlandsk Thehus today being the largest and most diversified business in terms of exclusive coffees. More than 20 different of the world's finest qualities are always in stock. The store's location on the corner of Nørrevoldgade and Vendersgade in Copenhagen is a known Copenhagen picture, and a visit to the Museum of Copenhagen shows the tea house as it looked in early 1900-century and it actually looks like today. Of course there has been changes inside the store, but everything is done with gentle hand so that the old, noble merchant view is maintained.
