Kapellet uppfördes 1856-57 på uppdrag av David Carnegie. Som ett led i sin omvårdnad av brukets anställda lät han uppföra både bostäder, skola och kyrka. Året innan hade han också bekostat en kyrka i Balquidder i Skottland, en plats där hans familj hade en släktgrav.
